How To Add New Firefox File Extensions (MIME)

Categories: Firefox - Useful Things

Firefox does not allow to add new file extensions, the reason I am not so sure. But what I need is to add a RAR extension to my firefox download action list so that everytime I download rar files it will auto save to my last saved folder without asking me which folder I want to save it again and again. You may have think why not just check the “Do this automatically for files like this from now on” option?? Unfortunately and for some reasons I am not able to select this option when the file extension is not listed on the firefox download action list.

I searched for the solution and I found it, there is a very useful firefox add ons named “MIME Edit”. This add ons can allows you to add and edit any file extensions you want into firefox download action list, great isn’t it? Is very easy to install, just go to the link below and hit the “Add to firefox” button, after the installation restart firefox and you are ready to go.

=> Click here to install this Add ons.

After you have restarted firefox, go to Tools > MIME Edit and the MIME Edit Preferences window will pop up.

1. Click the Edit tab.

2. Click the New Type button.

3. Enter the MIME Type, Description, Extension to suit your file extension. Most important to enter is the Extension, if your file is something.exe just enter exe.

4. Click Save it to Disk (or the other 2 options according to your needs).

5. Click Ok and you are done!

You should see your new file extension on the File Types list, just click Edit if you want to change the details.

You should now be able to download the file and save to your last saved location without firefox asking you where you want to save. Cheers =).
